Interactive Learning Session - Towards a Mindful World

Mindfulness is like an antidote to the stress, distraction, conflict and isolation that are becoming ubiquitous in the modern world. Creating a more mindful society starts with helping children through mindful parenting and education, and then by fostering mindful universities, workplaces and policy. This large undertaking is made easier with clear communication, quality information, user-friendly resources, and contextualizing mindfulness in such a way as to make it both relevant and desirable. In this session, we will share some of our experience in bringing this undertaking to fruition.

Practice Session - Hakuin's Nanso Meditation in Rinzai Zen Tradition in Japan

Nanso Meditation was practiced by Zen Master Hakuin Ekaku in Japan in the 18th century. It is a combination of body-scan and self-compassion meditation to prevent self-hate during intensive Zen practice.

Practice Session - Coming Home to Ourselves : Allowing everything to be just as is

Just being with our experiences can be transformative, without giving in to the urge to fix or change our experience in any way. Meeting ourselves just as we are with tenderness and kindness. Meeting our thoughts, feelings, sensations with acknowledgment and friendliness can bring us into a felt sense of our grounded, embodied Presence. Every experience can be a doorway into this natural space of Presence, an inherent space of deep resilience, love and wisdom. Every moment, no matter how it presents itself, is an invitation to come home to ourselves.

Interactive Learning Session - Trauma Refugees and Cross-Cultural Adaptation; Challenges and Insights from Mindfulness in Arabic project

With decades of conflict in the Arabic-speaking world, the stream of Arabic-speaking refugees all over the world has peaked in recent years. In refugee camps, and later, as they resettle in new home countries, migrants are met with harsh living conditions, language barriers and cultural prejudice piled onto the initial experiences of violence, loss, and destruction in their home countries. Their need for a tool to relieve their burden, to find a quiet centre within, and to cope with trauma residues that might obscure the mind and serve as a hindrance to relocation is acute. In this talk, central elements of the MiA Mindfulness in Arabic course will be elaborated upon, ones which are grounded in theory, brain research, and contemplative wisdom. The how-to of an 8-week course which incorporates MBSR practice, Somatic Experiencing technique and MSC, specially adapted for online format. Crucially to the population, emphasis has been put on creating a trauma-sensitive course, delivered in a culturally sensitive manner, ensuring that the content is not threatening to religious beliefs, and it being sensitive to the participants limited time availability, whilst still displaced. Preliminary pilot courses were conducted with Syrian and Kurdish refugees in Turkey and Greece, and over 1600 participants entered our online course. Results, based on feedback from trainers, social workers and refugees, shall be shared, suggesting that these sessions do contribute to psychological well-being, better communication, and decrease anxiety. A guided practice shall be offered in this session, and depending on the time maybe even some breakout room sharing, or a group discussion.

Practice-session - Just Like A Mountain Meditation

Sitting still, rooted into the earth can serve as a powerful metaphor and image for individuals interested in experiencing a sense of centeredness and rootedness to the ground, just like a mountain.

Interactive Learning Session - Environmental Compassion

Our Planet is not in a good condition. Global warming, massive biodiversity loss, and immigration driven by extreme weather events. How do we change our ways? How do we create a future in which both people and nature thrive? As founders of the Inner Green Deal Initiative, we believe that a meaningful transformation starts from the inside. Reconnecting to inner qualities such as openness, compassion and courage. Seeing the reality of environmental suffering and taking actions that intend to relieve that suffering. During this session, you will practice environmental compassion and reflect on the benefits of cultivating an “open heart and a strong back”.

Interactive Learning Session - Organizational Mindfulness: The Importance of Community

What is the value of community? What has supported you most in your mindfulness journey? At this time of the pandemic, the way we live and work is transforming, and the field of mindfulness will grow in new and exciting ways. In Andrew’s interactive session, he will invite you to reflect on your journey in mindfulness and the value of communities and networks like the Mindful Workplace Community during this time. He will explore the implementation of organizational mindfulness and the vision of the future of this work, and the challenges we need to overcome to get there.

Interactive Learning Session - Denialism during the Pandemic: Why is it so hard to accept Acceptance?

Jon Kabat-Zinn always mentioned that acceptance was one of the hardest, most difficult mindful attitudes to embody in our personal practice. And the pandemic strikes Brazil, and that which was already hard to embody becomes a full-on challenge. In this session, we will discuss aversion, and how it is embedded in Brazilian culture so much that it has brought the country to suffer the consequences of not showing up to COVID-19 responsively. The session will include an experiential guided practice that may help us and our clients foster an acceptance stance in the midst of aversion. Vitor will share his personal experience of conducting over 100 MBCT groups in hospitals and in private practice in Brazil.

Interactive Learning Session - Mindfulness Practice and the Promotion of Mental Health

As mindfulness meditation grows increasingly popular it is easy to lose sight of the fact that teaching it to people with mental health disorders requires additional oversight and responsibility. Some of this comes from a history of vulnerable populations being offered Great and Desperate Cures (to quote Elliot Valenstein) and also from the recognition that some conditions undermine the very attentional networks that are required for practice. We will review the value of treatment protocols, evidence and training in acting as safeguards teaching mindfulness to people with a mental health condition. We will also emphasize the importance of training and how to teach effectively whether in person or online.

Practice Session - Open Awareness Meditation

Open awareness meditation allows us to rest in the natural knowing quality of the mind that is always with us. We do so by allowing everything to be just as it is, while being undistracted. In doing so we come back to awareness, the essence of meditation.

Interactive Learning Session - Bridging Science and Contemplative Wisdom and Action

In this session we will be discussing the importance of merging science and contemplative wisdom together. We will engage in group activities to explore how these practices relate to ones own mind and how they affect your mental health. We will close with a short contemplative movement and breath practice to support somatic embodiment.

Interactive Learning Session - Mindfulness at the Cutting Edge: A Glimpse of the Future of the Mindfulness Movement

Pioneering thinkers, teachers, and scientists are beginning to write the next chapter of mindfulness in the modern world. In this session, we will explore some of the cutting-edge insights and practices that are pushing scientific research in exciting new directions, including a scientific framework to guide research and the creation of meditation-based programs that focuses on four key pillars of well-being.

Interactive Learning Session - The One Us: A Mindful Sound Meditation for a Healed Humanity

The Center for Contemplative Mind in Society (CMind) has been leading the work of transforming higher education through mindfulness and contemplative approaches for nearly 30 years. Join this intimate conversation between CMind co-founder Mirabai Bush and Board president, Michelle Chatman, as they reflect on the organization's history and the ways it is deepening the commitment to social justice. The session will close with The One Us, a sound meditation to support the work of anti-oppression, healing, and human flourishing.
