Jacqueline Gardner-Nix

Dr. Gardner-Nix is an Associate Physician and Chronic Pain Consultant, Departments of Anaesthesia, St Michael’s Hospital, and Associate Professor at University of Toronto.

She trained in Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in the USA in 2001, and evolved the trademarked Mindfulness-Based Chronic Pain Management curriculum from the MBSR program, customizing it to the needs of chronic pain sufferers, and researching the outcomes. Since 2003 more than 12,000 patients have taken these courses across Ontario, many accessing them through the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). She evolved an understanding of what pre-disposed people to chronic pain conditions, and wrote customized course materials, including her book: “The Mindfulness Solution to Pain”, which is available in bookstores. Alumni courses followed: Emotional Skills, and Lumina Spark and Leader, as well as courses modified for health care professionals for their own needs and to better understand and manage the needs of their chronic pain patients.

She established the “NeuroNova Centre for Mindful Solutions Inc.” to train and accredit others to facilitate the Mindfulness courses and to bring the courses “upstream” from the health care system into the corporate world. More than 140 professionals, including MDs, have gone through the facilitator training. By training others, courses for pain sufferers are available not only more widely throughout Ontario, but in Quebec (in French), the US, Australia, and the corporate sector. The courses are as useful for stress, caregiver fatigue and burnout as they are for chronic pain, and have been said, by many who have taken them, to have transformed their lives.
